I pace around my car for what seems like hours before I can finally walk up to Darcey’s grave. It’s a three hour drive to our hometown, but she’d never forgive me if I didn’t visit her on her birthday. The drive gave me some time to think about this morning with Everly, but I can’t solve any of that shit if she won’t talk to me. I was way out of line, I let my jealousy rule my reactions, and in the process, I hurt her. After she left, I didn’t bother asking Henry what he figured out about Darcey because clearly he thought it was Everly’s place to tell me. Otherwise he wouldn’t have yanked her out of my bed this morning. I’m still pissed about that. Just like I know his tics, he knows she’s my weak spot and he should have known how I’d react.
When I reach Darcey’s grave, I notice the fake flowers Grams brings every week are gone, and there are real red roses in the vase instead. I know Grams wouldn’t have brought fresh flowers, and certainly not long stem red roses. I look to be sure there isn’t anyone around, but I don’t see a soul in the entire cemetery. I set up the ballerina bear I bought on the way against the vase. Darcey loved her birthday. Once we were old enough to be out of the house, I made sure to make a spectacle out of her birthday every year—balloons, cake, she loved it all.
“I’m going to find out what happened to you,” I promise her, rubbing my hands over my face. “I’ve made a fucking mess out of everything, and you’re not here to tell me what a jackass I’m being.”
“For the record, Darce,” I close my eyes, choking down the tears I know need to come. The ones Everly tells me I need to let out, the ones I’m too proud to let fall. “Ah, shit. This is hard.” I huff, looking around anywhere but her grave. When I’ve gotten my emotions under control enough to speak, to tell her what I think she must have needed to hear when she was alive. “You could never disappoint me. And you certainly couldn’t let me down.”
I cross my arms over my chest and stare down at the flowers, and I can’t help the uneasy feeling that seems to be filling my chest. I kneel down to wipe away the leaves from the edge of the plaque when my phone rings. I check to see if it’s Everly, but when I see its Miles I let it ring until my voicemail picks up.
My eyes catch a black Escalade driving slowly down an aisle several rows away from where I’m standing. If one of those fucking Leary pricks followed me here to start shit, I’m ready. I’ve got nothing left to lose and plenty of rage. They would’ve had to follow me, because aside from Everly and the guys no one knows where Darcey is buried.
